The Swivelwheel-MOB Mobility Transport
System is the first single wheel transport system designed primarily for the mobility market place. This system allows users
of small to large vehicles the ability to transport their electric wheechairs and scooters. Unfortunately, not all vehicles
are able to have a receiver hitch mounted to them, but most can. In the past, transportation of these products have been limited
to pickups, SUV's, and vehicles with a Class-III and higher receiver hitch installed. The Swivelwheel-MOB may be attached
to any vehicle with a Class-I and higher receiver hitch mounted to the rear.
Why did we build this type of device for the mobility industry? Besides
coming from Medical Rehab industry where we designed and manufacturered power seating products for the electric wheelchair
market, we have had numerous customers call and want to order the Swivelwheel-46 system to transport their mobility scooters
and heelchairs. With a deck height of 25", this prohibited us from selling the system. Also, the Swivelwheel-46 system requires
the use of a Class-III or higher receiver on the vehicle. We told them that we would work on a design for that industry.
Why not use one of the available racks
or external lifts that install into my existing receiver hitch? Most of these racks only install into a Class-II
and above receiver hitch. This leaves out the customers with a Class-I & Class-II hitch. These racks are 28"-32" in width
and usually sit at receiver height. These racks can drag while going over some road and driveway transitions.
When installing an external lift system, remember that the weight
of the lift system must be taken into consideration in regards to the carrying capacity. If you have a Class-II receiver installed
on your vehicle and the lifting system has a weight of 100 pounds, you have a 150 pound wheelchair capacity available. There
is also a leverage factor to consider. Tongue weights are calculated for a specific weight exerting pressure straight
down at the ball mount. When you extend the center of the weight rearward the actual tongue weight increases due to the added
distance between the load and the rear wheels of the vehicle. With the Swivelwheel-MOB, the weight is actually distributed
between the receiver hitch and the wheel on the system which takes that leverage equation out of the picture.
The Swivelwheel-MOB system has a 3/16" thick aluminum deck and fold
down ramp. The deck dimension is 48" Long x 32" Wide. This is more than enough area for the largest wheelchair and scooter
bases. The fold down ramp is 36" Long x 32" Wide. Both surfaces are supplied with wide gri tape for traction while loading
and unloading. There is a 3" front wheel stop on the platform to keep the device from rolling off of the other end of the
platform while loading. Three ratchet tie-down straps are included with each system.
One of the unique features of the Swivelwheel-MOB system is the "Low
Boy" deck. The platform deck is 12" off of the ground. This makes loading easier. Each system includes caster legs for
moving the system around while not in use. These casters may be flipped forward or backward for storage while in transit.
All products include DOT lighting with a 4-wire flat plug.
The Swivelwheel-MOB utilizes a Torsion suspension system. This helps
generate a smooth ride. This suspension also rotates 360 degrees allowing the system to track with the towing vehicle. You
cannot jackknife or fishtail the system. Wherever you go, the Swivelwheel-MOB system tracks with you. You may view the video
below to see how the system reacts behind a tow vehicle.
The tire being utilized is a 4-80 x 8, 6-Ply, C-Rated highway Speed Trailer Tire. An
optional 5-70 x 8, D-Rated, 8-Ply tire isavailable. The weight capacity of the system is 500 pounds.
In order to help you evaluate your vehicle for use of the Swivelwheel-MOB
system, review the following information.
The first chart will give you the maximum tongue weights available
for your class of receiver hitch. Class-I & II receiver hitches have a 1/1/4" ID receiver tube. The Class-III & IV
receiver hitches are a 2" ID receiver tube.
The second chart shows the approx. tongue weights associated with
various weight loads.
Keep in mind that todays small cars do not have the carrying capacity
of years past. The auto manufacturers dictate the available loads associated with a specific vehicle.
By adding a higher rated hitch other than what is specified by your
auto manufacturer will not increase your carrying capacity for that vehicle.
In some cases, the rear suspension may need to be upgraded, or air
shocks added. Check with your local suspension specialist for support.
Not all vehicles can have a receiver
hitch installed. These are usually the compact or sub-compact models.
